  1. 1768-1848. French author. In exile from the
  2. French Revolution 1794-99, he wrote Atala
  3. 1801 (written after his encounters with North
  4. American Indians); and the autobiographical
  5. Rene, which formed part of Le Genie du
  6. christianisme/The Genius of Christianity
  7. 1802. He visited the USA 1791 and, on his
  8. return to France, fought for the royalist
  9. side which was defeated at Thionville 1792.
  10. He lived in exile in England until 1800. When
  11. he returned to France, he held diplomatic
  12. appointments under Louis XVIII. He later
  13. wrote Memoires d'outre tombe/Memoirs from
  14. Beyond the Tomb 1849-50.
